The embroidery of Edith Raymond and the embroidered Afghan response
A happy meeting in 2023 and the desire for intercultural exchange. Edith agrees to provide two series of her hand embroideries, the “snakes” and the “masks”. Snakes are dangerously familiar to Afghan women, the masks are reminiscent of the jinn, these good and evil spirits.
Then the Afghan women were invited to make embroidered responses to Edith’s embroideries. An embroiderer face to face, a firework between the great French lady and the Afghan women.
We are exhibiting these embroideries at the Créations & savoir-faire fair, Porte de Versailles in Paris.
For more detailed and practical information, see the Créations & savoir-faire trade fair website

Exhibition: The dialogue of the flowers
Internationally renowned quilter Elsbeth Nusser-Lampe has agreed to participate in this project: the exhibition shows Elsbeth’s quilts together with Afghan embroidery work inspired by them.
Her artistic style consists of floral work, although her intention is not to try and reproduce nature, but rather to evoke the feelings provoked by its creations. In this common project the challenge was to bring out the improvisational abilities of the Afghan embroiderers.
Elsbeth provided photos of some of her works, including close-ups, which were then distributed to a few carefully selected embroiderers through the care of Pascale Goldenberg, the coordinator of the Guldusi embroidery program.
The instructions given to the Afghan embroiderers: interpret the illustrations in the photos using your own hand stitching techniques.

Our sponsor “Madeira Garne” invited us to present the exhibition “Message” at h+h Cologne – »International Trade Fair for Creative Handicraft + Hobby Supplies«.
The competition “Message” invited all participants to integrate an Afghan embroidery featuring words or letters into a textile art work. Each of the 41 results, measuring A4 or A3, is therefore created by 4 hands. The work had to express a message; it could be either a legible text or a rather abstract composition. The embroidery had to stay visible. The message could be directed towards oneself, towards a known, beloved or unknown person or in general towards mankind.
You can find us at h+h cologne in Hall 2.1, B-031a.
Next to the exhibition, Afghan embroidery will be offered for sale. We are excited to see you there!
