“Hope”
Embroiderer Fahima

I first became aware of Afghanistan in 1962. A friend of my sister’s went there on a holiday to visit her brother. He is a textile engineer who worked on an aid project installing a cotton mill near Kabul. Upon her return she invited us to show us photos from her journey. I remember images of a green country with an abundance of flowers, a country that seemed exotic to me, with cotton fields, mulberry trees and full of beautiful flowers that I had not seen before. It was with these memories on my mind that I embarked on my textile work.
